rewriting protest slogans, 12 collages on paper, A4, 2008
The collage is created based upon the archive of protest slogans from the “revolution” of 1968. The collection
of more than 100 slogans comes from demonstrations and protest movements from the entire world. The idea
of rewriting slogans in the present is inspired by the protests in Poland when it was dangerous to come into open
confrontation with the regime. In some cases, people wrote their messages on small pieces of paper, which they
left in well frequented public spaces. I asked my friends to mimic this subversive manner of distributing ideas
and they rewrote slogans onto small pocket-sized pieces of paper. The resultant collage reflects the reactivation
of the “revolutionary” ideas in the present.
